My first experience of babywearing was a friend of mine using a stretchy wrap to carry her little girl when she was born and I thought it looked such a good idea as the baby was snuggled up close to mum and yet my friend could get on with jobs or walk her dogs. When I was pregnant I bought my first stretchy wrap with the intention of using it when walking our dog. I loved it from the first time I tried it with my daughter and used it pretty much every day for the first couple of months.
I then found out about a sling library near us and went along to a meet. A whole new world was opened up to me! I went looking for something that I could pop her in and out of quickly as she got a bit bigger and was recommended a ring sling, which I also loved. I went on to rent numerous slings of all different types and my own collection grew from one stretchy to eight different ones (to my husband’s bemusement). My lovely pushchair has been languishing in a cupboard ever since.
Update: October 2014
Slings are still as much a part of everyday life as they ever were for us. Daily dog walks involve grabbing whatever toddler carrier (mine or the library’s!) I have to hand, whipping my now 2 year old daughter up onto my back and heading out with our retriever whatever the weather. I wouldn’t swap the precious hour a day with a snuggling, snoozing, singing, chatting or shouting-at-the-dog little girl for anything. It is often the only time in the day that I get to carry her so I’m making the most of it for as long as it lasts!
It is an undeniable privilege to be part of other parents’ babycarrying journeys. I love what I do and can’t wait for whatever challenges and experiences lie ahead!
